We are a team of working professionals who decided to go back to school
to develop our computer science skills. Our senior thesis (Capstone)
turned into this amazing product.
As part of the Computer Science program at California State University Monterey Bay, students are required to complete a Capstone project. This project is designed to be the culmination of all the knowledge students gain through out their time in the program. Although the time given to complete this project was relatively short, Brian took it upon himself to use this project as an opportunity to build something meaningful and ambitious. Vuedeu was born out of the idea that their should be a better way for parents to be able to manage their child’s smart device usage in an intelligent and comprehensive way. Starting almost day one of the program, Brian got to work researching, conceptualizing and designing Vuedeu. After about a year into the program, he quickly realized that more help would be needed to help make it a success. He tapped Wendy Gray, with whom he had worked with on multiple projects in the past and who was eager to get on board. Putting in almost two full years of personal education and time learning Android, Vuedeu’s first production iteration will go into closed beta soon!
It has been a long road so far. We live by the phrase “if you want something bad enough, you’ll figure a way to make it happen”. Wendy and I have spent the past two years teaching ourselves while developing this application. We’ve gone from concept designs and workflow charts to fully realized code and an elegant, well-organized interface. We are close to releasing our first beta (which will be by invite only) to start gauging feedback from our users. More exciting things will continue to come!
We see Vuedeu not as a “Big Brother” tool, but rather as a way for parents to teach their kids how to manage themselves in our “online world” as well as make sure that they can develop social skills that will enable their future success. Too often as parents we drop a smart device in their hands and just expect them to understand how, when, what to do with them. Unfortunately, the reality is that kids learn to tune out the world and live their lives through the little screen in their hands. Having a tool like VueDeu can give parents peace of mind knowing what their kids are doing before they can potentially do things that can have life long consequences.
As for VueDeu itself, we have plans to include exciting and useful features that will blend seamlessly into our users everyday lives. Our first iteration will be Android only, but will extend to Apple and Windows products. We will also build a web portal so parents have multiple sources of management.
In the long term we see remote management that can extend well beyond the consumer space. Keep checking back to watch our progress.
